Low prices dishearten vegetable cultivators in Tangail

TANGAIL, Jan 23: The vegetable cultivators across the twelve upazilas of the district are disappointed due to falling price of their produce at the local markets.

Sources said although farmers of the district witnessed a good yield of the produce this season but they have become disheartened owing its lower prices which have been prevailing in the local markets.

In the last two of weeks the vegetables price has been decreased by Tk 5.0 to Tk 10 per kg in wholesale and retail market, a vegetable whole sell trader of Park Moydan Bazaar Alom Miah said.

Price of different types of vegetables was high in the local market by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg compared to the present market price. Due to increased supply of vegetables, price of the produce come down in the market, traders of Park Moydan Bazaar said.

Growers expressed frustration over low price of their produced vegetables. Some of them wondered how to recover their investment by selling their vegetables in the present market situation.

Azahar Ali (42) son of Momtaj Ali of village Chowbaria under Sadar upazila of the district said that he cultivated cabbage on his one bigha (33 decimal) of land in the current year by spending Tk 8,000, till now he has earned about Tk 7,000 by selling his produce, but now he is confused as to whether he can recover his investment by selling remain products or not.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail sources, farmers of the district cultivated vegetables on around 10,590 hectares of land during current season in 12 upazilas of the district.

At present one kg of cabbage being sold Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg but before couple of week it was being sold Tk 15 to Tk 25 per kg, one kg of bean was being sold Tk 30 to Tk 40 but in the present market is being sold Tk 15 to Tk 20 per kg, brinjal was being sold Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kg at present it is being sold Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg.

Sub-assistant of DAE, Tangail Shariful Islam said that in the current season growers of the area got a plenteous production of their vegetables due to favorable weather condition and they were also getting a good profit by selling their products. But the supply of produce was more against the local demand.

A vegetables retailer of Boat Tala Bazaar told The Financial Express, few weeks ago the price of vegetables was pretty high but now due to available supply of the vegetables, price has come down in the local markets.

He said poor and marginal farmers are facing problem because some of them borrowed money from the different money lenders to cultivate vegetables.

But the low market price of product made them apprehensive about repaying their loan.

The growers are counting losses as price of vegetables came down in the market. It can be discourage farmers to cultivate more vegetables, so related department of the government should take care about it, sources said.

Deputy Director of DAE, Tangail Abdur Razzaque said, different varieties of winter vegetables are available at the local wholesale and retail markets; therefore price of the vegetables has come down normally.

Also growers of the district got an abundant production of vegetables in the current season. Favorable weather condition and in timely supply of fertiliser, insecticide and related agri- inputs of vegetables cultivation helped growers get a bumper production of the produce, he said.
