Magura litchi growers happy over yield, price

MAGURA, May 22: Bumper yield has brought smile on the faces of litchi growers in the district.

Some farmers said they are happy over the production and present market price.

"We are expecting over Tk 250 million profit this season from the juicy fruit", they said.

Isakada, Alamkhali, Hazrapur, Hazipur, Kanchanpur, Rautara, Kashinathpur, Alaipur and Khalimpur villages under Magura Sadar are well-known for growing quality litchi.

About 10,000 people are engaged with the fruit cultivation, production and trading.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said over 750 hectares of land were brought under litchi cultivation in the district this season.

Grower Jewel Ahmed of Alaipur village under Magura Sadar said he cultivated litchi on three bighas of land.

"I have already made a profit of Tk 0.1 million and expecting to make Tk 0.1 million more", the farmer said.

Trader Belal Hossein from Faridpur district said, "I have purchased a litchi orchard at Tk 0.7 million in Isakhada village two month ago. Production of the orchard good and I have earned Tk 0.6 million profit."

"I am expecting to make profit of Tk 0.4 million more from the rest of the yield", he added.

DAE official Ruhul Amin said this year farmers in the district have achieved a good yield amid a favourable weather. Market price is also satisfactory.
