Maize farming gaining popularity in Magura

MAGURA, Dec 11: Maize cultivation is gaining popularity in the district.

Sources said farmers in the district are showing more interest in growing the crop for low production cost and high market prices.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said maize farming was not popular in the district before. Only a few growers had cultivated the item in a small scale.

Maize was cultivated on 11 hectares of land in the district five years ago.

Now the scenario has changed.

This year some 110 hectares of land have been brought under maize farming.

Cultivation area may exceeds to 150 hectares of land, DAE officials added.

Maize cultivation requires less irrigation, fertilisers and insecticides. Growers are also provided incentives by government every season.

This year a total of 500 farmers got assistance from the government. Each of the farmers was provided 2.0 kgs of seed, 20 kgs of DAP and 10 kgs of MoP.

Belal Hossein of Moghi village under Magura Sadar said he has brought four bighas of land under the farming of the Maize this year with the expectation to make a profit of Tk 65,000.

Magura DAE training officer Shohrab Hossein said maize cultivation is a profitable venture.

He urged other farmers to expand the production of the crop for more profit.
