Muksudpur upazila growers busy farming onion

GOPALGANJ, Feb 13: Onion growers of Muksudpur upazila of the district are passing a busy time to achieve the onion farming target.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj official sources, a total of 2,952 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation in the district in the current season.

Of them 2,200 hectares in Muksudpur Upazila where the target is 31,500 tonnes. Some 20,000 farmers are involved in its cultivation, sources said.

Amanat Sheikh (45), an ideal farmer of village Kamlapur under Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj said, I have cultivated "Tahirpuri" variety of onion on 100 decimals of land this season spending about Tk 60,000. I hope to get about 200 maunds of onion from my land if the weather condition remains favourable. The current market price of that amount is about Tk 1,60,000.

Monotosh Das, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO), Poura block, Muksdupur told The FE that soil in this region is more favourable for cultivation of onion and farmers are very active in this area besides concerned department timely supplied the agro-inputs to the farmers. As a result farmers are getting a bumper production from onion farming, Monotosh said.

Jakir Hossain (40), another ideal farmer of village Batikamari under Muksdupur upazila said, I have cultivated 'Laltir King" variety on 100 decimals of land and the growth condition is satisfactory. Spending about Tk 60,000, I hope to get about 200 maunds of onion, the market price of which would be about Tk 1,60,000, Jakir said.

Abdul Jalil Mollah (52), a farmer of village Kamlapur of the same upazila in the district said I have cultivated "Laltir King" onion on 150 decimals of land spending about Tk 90,000 and condition of its growth is satisfactory. I expect to get over 300 maunds of onion which market price is about Tk 2,40,000.

Nitul Roy, Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO), Muksudpur told the The FE that constantly monitoring the overall progress in onion farming. Smooth supply of agro-inputs to the farmers were helpful to achieve the success, UAO Muksudpur said.
