N-region growers see good lotkan yield

RANGPUR, June 23: Lotkan (Burmese grape) growers of different areas under Rangpur division are delighted to witness a good yield of the fruit during the current season.

According to the agriculturists, the soil of many areas in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, and Panchagarh districts under the region are suitable for its farming.

Presently, Lotkan is cultivated in a limited extent due to non-availability of required facilities.

The local cultivators claim that proper training and financial and technical assistances can pave way for large-scale commercial production of it across the region.

Aminul Islam, a lotkan grower at Mahiganj area under Rangpur Sadar said he has been successfully cultivating lotkan in his homestead for the last eight years and selling those at good price.

Witnessing his success, many people have engaged themselves in its cultivation, he also said.

Lotkan saplings require a little space to grow up. Two lotkan saplings need at least 8 feet of space for proper growth.

After plantation, a mature tree can give fruit within three or four years, he added.

Munna Mia, another lotkan grower of Wapda area of Sayedpur upazila in Nilphamari said that he planted more than 15 saplings of lotkan in his 16 decimals of land four years ago.

As the plants have been replete with fruits this year, he has begun harvesting those.

He also expressed satisfaction over the yield of the fruit.

A number of growers at different areas under the region said they have been cultivating the fruit in their homestead for many years and selling those at a good price.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources, lotkan trees usually grow on high fallow lands.

Around 200 saplings can be planted on 45-50 decimals of land and some 110 to 120 maunds of fruit can be harvested each year, sources added.
