Nabaganga river dredging goes on in full swing

MAGURA, Feb 19: Work on the Nabaganga river dredging project in the district is going on in full swing.

The river was almost dead and had lost its navigability.

Different socio-cultural organisations had long been demanding proper steps to save the river.

Finally, the Water Resource Ministry paid attention to the demand and initiated dredging of the river for bringing back its navigability.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Magura, sources said Tk 414 million has been sanctioned for the project work on which started in January, 2017.

The project is expected to be completed within June 2019, sources added.

On completion of the project, about 30,000 hectares of land will be brought under irrigation facilities. More than 0.2 million tonnes of additional crops will be produced from the land, BWDB officials further said.

Besides, fish production will be increased by 2,000 tonnes in the district.

BWDB Executive Engineer ABM Khan Mozahedy said, "We are optimistic to complete the project within the scheduled time."

Executive Director of Palli Prokriti, an NGO, Shafiqur Rahman said the project will come as a boon for maintain ecological balance in the area. Grassroots farmers and fishermen will be highly benefited.
