NATORE, June 12: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to produce some 40,169 tonnes of jute in the district.

Some 17,240 hectares of land have brought under the farming of the cash crop this season.

DAE sources said a good number of farmers in the district did not grow jute this year as they incurred a massive loss last year.

They were disappointed over the low market prices of the produce.

Cultivators have to spend average Tk 22,000 to produce quality on an acre of land and they expect to make profit over Tk 30,000 to Tk 35,000 from the produce.

Tossa variety is popular in the area due to bumper production in the semi high and high place across the region, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Helal Uddin.

In a recent visit at different places of Boraigram upazila, this correspondent found mild jute plants were growing well.

It signals a bumper production this season.

Growers were taking care of their cropland so that they could get their desired output.

Deputy Director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said, "We have provided all supports to the jute growers in the area to make the farming programme a success."
