Number of dengue patients at Jashore, Kushtia hospitals still high

Situation improves in Sylhet with three patients admitted

JHENIDAH, Sept 15: The number of dengue patients admitted to Jashore and Kushtia hospitals is still alarming.

A total of 83 dengue patients got admitted to Jashore 250-bed hospital in the last 24 hours till 11 am on Sunday.

In Kushtia 32 news dengue patients were admitted to the 250-bed hospital there.

Among the 10 districts of Khulna division, Jashore has the highest prevalence of dengue patients.

According to sources at the office of the director of medical department in Khulna, 6,723 dengue patients were detected across the division from July 21 to September 15. Of them, 2,266 were diagnosed in Jashore.

So far seven dengue patients died in the district. According to the civil surgeon, the number is five.

In Kushtia 32 new dengue patients were admitted in the 250-bed hospital totaling 945.

Among the total dengue patients admitted in the government hospitals and private clinics in the division, 1,149 in Khulna, 24 in Bagerhat, 629 in Satkhira, 385 in Narail, 360 in Magura, 420 in Jhenidah, 945 in Kushtia, 119 in Chuadanga and 183 were detected in Meherpur districts.

Associate Professor of Environment and Technology Department of Jashore Science and Technology University, Dr Mahfuzur Rahman said, "Due to two reasons the number of dengue patients may be higher in Jashore. Firstly Jashore is a transit point. The second point is that the mosquito preventive measures are weak in Jashore."

Jashore Civil Surgeon attributed a number of reasons to the alarming increase of dengue patients here. He said Jashore has a number of water-logged places which may be the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. This area is linked with different parts of the country through roadways, railways and airways.

Jashore civil surgeon said people of Jashore prefer to take institutional treatment.

Meanwhile, Kushtia Civil Surgeon Rowshon Ara Begum said in the last 24 hours 32 dengue patients got admitted to the 250-bed hospital. She said that people were locally affected by dengue now.

Our Sylhet Correspondent adds: With a further improvement on the overall dengue situation, three patients were admitted to different hospitals in the Sylhet division including the Sylhet city during the last 24 hours.

Of the three patients, two were admitted into the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital (SOMCH) and one at the Habiganj District Hospital. None was admitted to the Sylhet district, Moulvibazar or in Sunamganj district hospitals.
