Onion harvest going on in full swing in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Apr 22: Onion harvest is going on in full swing in the district. Sources said production of the spice was good in the area but sudden hail storm and thunder shower have damaged massive cropland recently.

Abdur Rahman, a farmer of Gomnati union under Domar upazila, said he cultivated onion in one bigha (30 decimal) of land where 60 per cent of the crop has been destroyed by hailstorm.

Abu Bakar Siddik, a farmer of Itakhola union under Sadar upazila, said he cultivated onion in one bigha of land which was not injured by sleet. He said he harvested the crop where his total production is 40 maunds which he would be able to sale at a total price of Tk 40,000 while his total cost was Tk 10,000.

Sources said newly harvested onion has started to come in the markets. It is being sold at Tk 1,000 per maund.

DAE sources said around 1,676 hectares of land were brought under the farming of onion with the production target of 13,392 tonnes.
