SYLHET, Apr 03: Final bills for the schemes on the crop protection embankments in haor areas in Sunamganj would be paid after field survey of works by a team from the water resources ministry this time. The decision was taken at a meeting of the district committee for the project implementation and monitoring recently with deputy commissioner of Sunamganj Md Sabirul Islam chaired.

The DC said the project Implementation Committees (PICs) would be paid their bill for the works completed on the respective embankments and closures. The special teams would survey and ascertain that, he added.

Besides the concerned union council and upazila level committees would have to be responsible for the schemes, taken up as allegedly unnecessary, the meeting decided.

However, the meeting was of the view that with the sincere works by all concerned including officials and locals, the works on the crop protection embankments had been done better comparatively than the previous years. So that all should remain alert the farmers could harvest their Boro crops safely.

Deputy Director fo the Local Government Md. Emran Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Habibullah Jewel, WDB's Executive engineer-I Abu Bakar Siddique, Executive Engineer-II Khushi Mohan Sarker, UNOs Ishrat Jahan of Sadar, Samir Biswas of Biswambharpur, Purnendu Deb of Tahirpur, Kazi Mohua Momtaj of Doarabazar, Manirul Islam of Jamalganj, WDB section officers Ashraful Siddiuque of Sadar and Nihar Ranjan Das of Jamalganj also spoke on the occasion.

WDB officials informed the meeting so far Tk 1.24 billion had been released by the ministry against the demand of works worth Tk 1.77 billion.

It is stateable here that after the colossal crop damage last year due to early rains and floods coupled with massive corruption on the crop protection embankments, the government decided major change in the process of execution of works. Locally formed project implementation committees, with the farmers and officials were entrusted with the task this year while district and upazila level committees, headed by the administration officials were monitoring those. However, there had been some allegations of irregularities in places.
