Peasants happy over good production of hog plum in Bogura district

BOGURA, July 16: Good number hog plum, locally known as Amra, growers are delighted over good yield and fair market price this season in Bogura district.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) the seasonal fruit Amra cultivation is gaining popularity among the marginal peasants across all twelve upazilas of the district due to its lucrative profit.

DAE also inspires the root level farmers to grow the fruit abundantly to make the extreme poor farmers as self-reliant. To expand the farming they are proving technical support among the eager farmers.

Meanwhile, the fruit has positive side to the human body as it contains different types of nutrients like calcium, vitamin C, carotene, sugar and Iron along with food scarcity.

Peasants of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Shibganj, Sherpur, Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtoly, Nandigram, Adamdighi, Dhunot, Shajahanpur and sadar have started harvesting the fruits in a happy mood from the first week of July, said wholesaler Hamidul Islam at Mohasthan bazar. He again said the process will continue till September.

In a recent visit the correspondent found each maund of hog plum is being sold at Tk 760 to Tk 800 in the retail market while Tk 550 to 600 in the wholesale markets across the region. The growers gather in the big markets to sell them in a high price.

The wholesalers are collecting hog plum from the growers directly and sending them to Dhaka and other places of the country by trucks mitigating local demand.

Farmer Aminul Islam, 45, under Shibganj upazila said he planted some 30 high yield hog plum sapling two years back spending Tk 3,000 and he begins to harvest the fruit this year.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said generally the hog plum trees start flowering massively from the month of January if the trees have been nurtured well.
