RANGPUR, Dec 25: Sufferings of the people have mounted due to lack of a permanent bridge over the river Jomuneshwari at Mokmaler ghat area of Taraganj upazila in the district.
Around 20,000 people of different villages under the upazila including Narayanjon, Machhuapara, Joybangla Palpara and Kumarpara are suffering much.
They have to use a bamboo-made bridge over the river to come to the upazila headquarter amid serious risk, sources said.
Business activities and public health services are facing severe setback in the area.
The local people living both sides of the river are not able to travel smoothly between the upazila headquarter owing to absence of a bridge over the river.
The students of different educational institutions have to suffer a lot in reaching their institutions through the bamboo bridge.
Many of them fail to go to school in the rainy season for panic of accidents on the bridge, locals alleged.
Peasants of the areas also face difficulties in carrying their produces to different areas due to lack of a concrete bridge over the river, it is alleged.
"The bridge becomes very risky in the monsoon. The bamboos get slippery and we cannot cross it easily. Sometimes the bamboos get damaged, yet we have to cross the bridge every day", said Akmal Mia, a resident of the area.
During election campaigns the local political leaders make repeated pledges to construct a permanent bridge over the river but they forget it once elected public representative, locals alleged.
Kursha Union Parishad Chairman Afzalul Haque said people of the areas have been demanding a concrete bridge over the Jomuneshwari river in the area for long but no step has yet been taken by the authorities concerned in this regard.
The local people urged the government to take necessary measures to build a permanent bridge over the river in the area so that they can travel smoothly without any risk.
