BOGURA, July 20: More than 50,000 people in Dhunot, Sariakandi and Sonatola upazilas in the district are worried over the possible collapse of village protection embankment due to onrush of water of the mighty Jamuna river.

A good number of locals said the river water is flowing at a height of about 8.0 feet. The dam may collapse any moment. The flood will affect new areas if it collapses.

Moreover, erosion by the Jamuna has taken a serious turn in the upazilas. Many dwellings, croplands and other structures have already gone under the water.

Some locals said illegal extraction of sand from different places along the river is one of the main reasons behind the situation.

Asadul Haque, deputy assistant engineer of Bogura Water Development Board (WDB) said that flood control dam along the bank of Jamuna river is at risk in three upazilas.

WDB Executive Engineer Hasan Mahmud said, "We are monitoring the situation. Work has already been started to support the dam with sand sacks and geo bags", he added.
