PM opens new Sylhet central jail today

SYLHET, Oct 31: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will open the newly-built Sylhet Central Jail through a video conference tomorrow (Thursday).

Construction of the much-talked about buildings of the jail was completed recently after repeated time extensions. However, shifting of inmates and others from the old structures would take some time, an official informed Wednesday.

The new jail is situated in the suburban Badaghat area.

An official at the Public Works Department (PWD) said main work of the project was completed recently.

He said for some unavoidable reasons including contractors' negligence, things had been delayed time and again. Prolonged and excessive rains had also disrupted the work.

Initially it was a Tk 1970 million project, but the expenditure had to be raised to Tk 2,260 million due to several delays and cost escalation, he added.
