JHENIDAH, Oct 13: On the occasion of the 50th death anniversary of the poet of 'Muslim Renaissance', a Doa Mahfil was held at Kabi Golam Mustafa Secondary School at his own village today in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah.
Golam Mustafa was born on December 23, 1897 at Monoharpur village of the upazila, 3 kilometres away from upazila town, and died on October 13 in 1964 at the age of 69, of cerebral thrombosis.
Poet Golam Mustafa's ancestral home with many things used by the poet and valuable photographs drawn by his second son Mustafa Aziz, sole artist of the first pencil sketch, are in a pitiable condition at the village.
Though Kabi Golam Mustafa memorial library got a concrete building at the yard of the poet's house in 2008 implemented by Zila Parishad, Jhenidah, at a cost of Tk 1.70 million, there are, virtually, no reading materials there.
Some parental property of the poet, including his paternal land and trees are secretly being sold, reliable sources said.
Even the birth and death anniversaries of the poet are not observed at his village home.
Golam Mustafa, who finished his primary education in Damukdia, passed the Entrance in 1913 from Shailkupa high school.
Later, he passed the intermediate and B.A. from Doulatpur College in 1916 and Kolkata Ripon College in 1918 respectively, followed by his obtaining B.T degree in 1922. Golam Mustafa, a teacher in professional life, started teacher-ship in Barrackpur High School (India), and then he worked as a Headmaster in Bakura Zila School, Faridpur Zila School, and retired from teaching in 1950.
Golam Mustafa got recognition as a poet, when he was a mere student of class VIII, and his first poem, 'Andriapole', was printed in 1913 while he was studying in class X.
Among his books on poetry, Hasnahena, Raktoraag, Khosroje, Sahara, Kabbyakahini, Tarana-e-Pakistan, Bul Bulisthan, Kalam-e-Iqbal and Boni Adam are remarkable.
The novels he penned are Ruper Nesha and Bhangabook. His biographical works include Bishwanabi, Bishwanabir Boishista and Hazrat Abu Bakar.
Poet Golam Mostafa was bestowed with the titles of Kabbya Shudhakor and Sitara-e-Emtiaz, and received President Medal.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Shailkupa Muhammad Ali Prince said measures are being taken to save the poet's ancestral property.
Deputy Commissioner of Jhenidah Md. Shafiqul Islam, while contacted, told the FE correspondent, "We demanded of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs that it should preserve the memories of poet Golam Mustafa at the village."
