Potters from remote areas in Joypurhat passing busy time

JOYPURHAT, Jan 13: More than 9,000 potters from different remote villages of the district have attained solvency.

Sources from the local office of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation a good number of people of the district are engaged with the profession.

"I make different size earthen pots according to the demand of the buyers," said Uttom Kumar Paul of Kashira village under Akkelpur upazila.

He further said, "I earn Tk 700 to Tk 800 daily."

The wholesalers from the adjacent districts visit the locality to purchase the pots from the artisans directly. A big size pot is being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 50, middle one at Tk 40 to Tk 45 and the a small one at Tk 20 to Tk 25.

In a recent visit this correspondent found both male and female artisans of Akkelpur, Kalai, Panchbibi, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas are passing busy time to prepare earthen pots.

President of the district Potters' Samity Sudhangsu Kumar Paul said due to low market price, a good number of artisans have already given up the profession. He urged the government to take effective measures for the betterment of the ancestral profession.
