Pumpkin-potato intercropping flourishes in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Feb 25: Pumpkin cultivation is increasing in the district.

Growers start farming the vegetable item applying mix and intercropping methods along with potato. After harvesting of potato, pumpkin plants remain in the farmland till it is harvested.

Farmers' sources said nearly 200 saplings of pumpkin need to be planted in a bigha (30 decimal) of land to harvest 1,000 pumpkins.

Farmer Amzad Hossain said he cultivated potato and pumpkin on 10 acres of land applying intercropping system. He said he expects to produce 30,000 pumpkins from the land and make a profit of Tk 1.0 million from the sale.

A good number of farmers said cultivation of pumpkin along with potato is gaining popularity among the cultivators. It ensures good yield as well as handsome profit.
