NAOGAON, Aug 27: Pumpkin farmers of Naogaon district including the vast Barind tract are delighted over the bumper production and fair market prices this season.

The peasants are selling their produced crops to the consumers as well as wholesalers with much enthusiasm across the region.

Sources said many growers in the district used modern farming methods in producing the vegetable.

They are also satisfied over the present market price, sources added.

High land is suitable for pumpkin cultivation. Cultivators sow the seeds after harvesting Rabi crops.

"I have grown pumpkin on 12 decimals of land," said farmer Altaf Hossain of Mohadebpur upazila. He again said, “Low production cost and good profit inspires me to cultivate the crops."

Farmers started harvesting the vegetable from the first week of the current month. Locally-produced pumpkins are transported to different areas across the country.

Trader Nur Islam of Atrai upazila said he purchases some 20 pieces of pumpkin at Tk 1,000 from farmers directly and sell in a local market daily.

Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said pumpkin cultivation is expanding in the district every year.
