RANGPUR, Mar 27: Mango cultivators in Rangpur division are worried over the yield this season due to immature fruits.

Expressing disappointment, growers said despite massive sprouting in the very beginning of the season, mango production might drop this year owing to lack of rainfall which caused massive fall of growing mangoes.

Sources said, buds are getting dry and feeble resulting massive fall of growing mangoes caused by extreme heat during daytime and winter season-like cold at night.

According to mango growers rain is a must at the end of March for mangoes to grow bigger but unfortunately the region did not witness adequate rainfall during the period, consequently huge quantities of immature mangoes are coming off the trees.

Mango growers Abul Kashem, Anisur Rahman, Mofakkharul under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur and Bulbul, Mizanur and Shahidul under Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur district told this correspondent that at the initial stage they became overjoyed to see huge flowering and sprouting of mangoes and also hoped for a bumper yield of mango this season.

But scarcity of rain for the last few months dashed their hopes, they added.

A number of Haribhanga mango growers of the region told the FE that last year they failed to earn satisfactory profit by selling the fruit owing to its low price.

With the hope to recoup the loss they gave optimum efforts for farming mangoes this year but they are worried as they might not get expected yield of the fruit due to prolonged drought, they apprehended.

DAE Rangpur office sources said, presently, drought-like situation forced a massive fall of immature fruits. The department is providing necessary assistance and advice to the growers in this regard so that they can tackle the adverse situation, sources also said.

Horticulturist of DAE Khandaker Md Mesbahul Islam said owing to drought-like situation mango buds are drying up and becoming weak.

The immature fruits are not getting enough water as trees are consuming most of it in its osmosis process which is forcing a massive dropping of mangoes.

He advised the growers to sprinkle sufficient water on mangoes to help them grow bigger.
