RANGPUR, Mar 18: Wheat growers of the five districts in Rangpur agriculture region have begun harvesting the produce this season.

At the initial stage of harvest, the growers are delighted, as they are getting good yield. The plants have grown well owing to congenial condition prevailing in the districts. They are also expecting fair price of their produce.

According to the Department of Agriculture extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources, around 20,000 hectares of land have been brought under wheat cultivation this year in the region and the farmers are optimistic about achieving good production, sources also said.

The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat.

Anarul, a wheat grower of Tilokpara village under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district told FE that he cultivated wheat on two bighas of land and the condition of its growth is satisfactory. Adequate water supply, agri-inputs and congenial weather condition favoured wheat cultivation this year, he added.

Hossain Ali, another wheat cultivator at Nabdiganj village under Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur district said, cultivation of wheat needs irrigation only three times and it is less costly than paddy cultivation.

Production cost of wheat on one bigha of land is around Tk 7,000 to Tk 8,000. It needs about Tk 11,000 to Tk 12,000 to cultivate Boro paddy on one bigha of land, he said.

This year the crop has been cultivated in the mainland as well as in char areas of the region, as many landless and river eroded people have also brought char lands under wheat farming this year, sources said.

DAE Rangpur official sources said that smooth supply of water and agri-inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides boosted wheat cultivation in the region which made the farmers hopeful about getting a plenteous production of this crop during the current season.
