Reconstruction of Sylhet-Sunamganj road project to start soon

SYLHET, May 26: At last the major project for reconstruction the Sylhet-Sunamganj road would begin soon.

The fate of widening and reconstruction project of the regional highway had become uncertain as the bidding was cancelled for the third time in November last year. It happened as two contracting farms filed cases.

Things have been resolved recently, said an official. Now evaluation of the bids would be done, said additional chief engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD), Sylhet zone, Golam Mostafa last week.

It may take another two months to start the work, he added.

At about 15 important points on the highway is risky for vehicular movement and innumerable potholes have developed at different places of the 77 km road from Sylhet to Sunamganj district town.

The existing 18 feet road would be widened to 24 feet to cope with the increasing number of vehicles. The important road also links the capital with the remote and frontier district and its upazials.

The job of Tk 800 million tender was floated for widening and repair works on the Sunamganj district portion. Now it would be done in two packages, the official added.

However, physical works may be delayed due to rains and inclement weather, Mr Mostafa added.
