Red spinach growers make over Tk 12m profit this season

JOYPURHAT, Feb 27: Abundant yield of red spinach has made hundreds of grassroots farmers happy this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), over 3,000 hectares of land were brought under the cultivation of red spinach this season.

DAE officials said growers across the district made a profit over Tk 12 million.

More than 2,000 peasants in Akkelpur, Kalai, Khetlal, Panchbibi and Sadar upazilas of the district were engaged with the leafy vegetable farming, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

They have been provided quality seeds by the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC).

Besides, DAE supplied fertilisers among the farmers as incentive.

DAE officials said a good number of growers show their interest in farming the popular item.

Farmers sprinkle seeds in November and start harvest the vegetable in January, said farmer Osman Goni under Akkelpur upazila.

He cultivated red spinach one 12 decimals of land and made a profit over Tk 23,000.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said farmers in the area show more interest to expand the farming of red spinach for high profit.
