Road mishaps claim nine lives

A total of nine people were killed in road accidents in three districts on Sunday and Saturday, reports UNB.

In Bogura, three people were killed when a covered van hit them on Dhaka-Bogra highway at Sonka Bazar in Sherpur upazila on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Sadek Ali, 55, Al Mahmud, 35 and Mohsin Ali, 52, residents of Sonka South village.

Kajal Kumar Nandi, in-charge of Kundarhat highway police camp, said the Dhaka-bound covered van run over the three pedestrians around 12 pm as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving them dead on the spot.

Police seized the covered van but the driver managed to flee the scene.

In Sirajganj, at least three people were killed and three others injured following a head-on collision between a truck and a covered van on Dhaka-Bogura highway in Dadpur area of Raiganj upazila on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Rashidul Islam, 24, Abdur Rahman, 32, Alamin Hossain, 22, hailing from Sariakandi upazila in Bogura district.

Abdul Kader Zilani, officer-in-charge of Hati Kumrul Highway Police Station, said the accident occurred when the Bogura-bound tin-laden truck collided head-on with the covered van around 7:15 am, leaving the trio dead on the spot and three injured.

After the collision, the two vehicles overturned into a roadside ditch.

On information, police and fire fighters recovered the bodies after one and half of frantic efforts.

Injured Minhaj, 22, Md Sohel, 20 and Sagor Ali were admitted at Raiganj Upazila Health Complex, said the OC.

The accident halted vehicular movement on the highway for about two hours.

In Shariatpur, three workers were killed and six others injured as a truck plunged into a roadside ditch in Khelsi area of Sadar upazila on Saturday night.

The deceased were identified as Md Rahmat Hossain, 40, Naim Hossain, 25, and Idris, 60, hailing from Chetua area in Ashasuni upazila in Satkhira district.

The injured workers said that they had come to Shariatpur from Satkhira on April 24 for cultivating paddy.

Niaz Mohammad, deputy assistant director of Shariatpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the accident took place around 10:30 am when the paddy-laden truck carrying 12 workers plunged into the roadside ditch after its driver lost control over the wheels, leaving the trio dead on the spot and six others injured.

The injured were admitted at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
