RU forms anti-ragging body following incident

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Jan 23: A 27-member committee has been formed to stop ragging on Rajshahi University (RU) campus. University Proctor Prof Lutfar Rahman confirmed the information.

Sources said Prof Rahman was made the convener of the committee. Besides, there are 26 members in the committee, including some hall provosts and professors of the different departments. The Proctor signed a notice in this regard yesterday.

It has been said in the notice that ragging is a social crime. It creates mental problems for the victims. So no ragging would be allowed at the university. If any complaint of ragging is received, action will be taken against the persons involved for breaking the law.

Professor Rahman said, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has ordered the formation of anti-ragging committee in universities. As per UGC order, a committee has been constituted by the university authorities at RU. This committee will be very active in preventing ragging.

Sources said that complaint has been received that some senior students of Bangla department engaged in the malpractice. The victim is the first year student of the same department.

Senior students of the department physically tortured him in the name of ragging yesterday while he came to attend the orientation class at the Shahidullah Arts building, sources added.

Admitting the incident, Professor Rahman said, "I have directed the Department head to punish those who were involved in the ragging. Otherwise, the administration will take steps against them."
