SIRAJGANJ, Feb 02: Due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agro-input, the farmers of Sirajganj district are expecting abundant output of coriander.

They got fair market price and good yield last year as the authority concerned had provided quality seeds and fertiliser according to the demand of the peasants.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office said the farmers of the district have brought over 450 hectares of land under coriander cultivation. DAE is expecting farmers will produce around 300 tonnes of fresh output this season.

They had made a good profit previous year growing the crop on commercial basis across the region, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Azizur Rahman.

"To make a noticeable profit more than 700 marginal farmers of the agro-zone are engaged with the spice farming," said farmer Anarul Islam under Kazipur upazila.

He said, "We have encouraged them to grow the coriander leaves on a large scale as it brings profit."

During a visit this correspondent found the peasants were taking care in their coriander farms defying adverse weather conditions. They were separating weed from the land and trying to keep the land free from being soggy at any cost.

Meanwhile, good number farmers of the region have started to harvest the crops on a small scale and getting fair market price. They are seen happy over bumper production across the area.

"I have cultivated coriander on four decimals of land this current season spending Tk 2000 to pay quality seed, fertilser and labour cost," said farmer Zahangir Hossain under Ullapara upazila. "I am expecting to get Tk 18,000 from the leaves if the price remains favourable." he added.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Arshad Ali said farmers of the district are showing more interest to bring huge crop land under coriander cultivation in a large scale to bring solvency. We provide all sort of necessary agro-input among the farmers, he added.
