Speakers for creating public awareness to save rivers from pollution

RAJSHAHI, Apr 22 (BSS): Speakers at a youth campaign in the district unequivocally called for saving the rivers and their tributaries from pollution and contamination for restoring a healthy ecosystem.

Once upon a time, they viewed human civilisation was established depending on only rivers throughout the country. But, at present, most of the rivers are facing huge pollution and contamination posing a serious threat to the whole ecosystem.

The Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) and Barind Education and Cultural Diversity Protection Centre (BECDPC) jointly organised the campaign in the city on Saturday afternoon.

More than 80 people from various youth organisations including Youth Action for Social Change (YASC), Eligible Youths for Evolution (EYV), Bangladesh Initiative Education Service (BIES) and Rotaract Club of Rajshahi took part in the programme.

Inaugurating the campaign as the chief guest Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul said if the rivers were polluted the public health as a whole will have to face an endangered condition.

Protection of the Padma is the precondition to protect the Rajshahi region and its vast Barind tract. He urged people from all walks of life to come forward and work together to protect the mighty river from furthermore pollution.

Utmost emphasis should be given on creating public awareness for protecting the existing water resources from further pollution and contamination to safeguard human civilization and biodiversity.
