SYLHET, Apr 25: Standing Boro paddy on about 5,000 acres land may go inundated, apprehended a number of farmers.
Sources said some breaches have been developed during the last two days on the crop protection embankment erected on Najarkhali closure at Tanguar haor under Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj.
A villager from Golabari on Tanguar Haor area said the Tanguar haor management committee reconstructs the embankment almost every year during the dry season. Accordingly taka one million was sanctioned for the reconstruction job this year through a 5-men project committee, said the treasurer of the said management committee.
A number of villagers alleged there had been poor works on the project this year. The implementation committee should be held responsible for any incident of crop loss due to the flawed embankment, they said, the locals had repeatedly asked the project committee for doing the job properly. But they didn't bother although we had requested for compacting the earth used for the embankment wortk, the locals alleged further.
Some farmers informed Boro paddy on about 5,000 acres on Eralia Kana, Goniakuri, Lamargul, Majergul, Nandia, Tanergul, Golgolia, Sonadubi and Samsagar haor area may go inundated if the breaches turn serious since there had been rains amid stormy weather for days.
Since the farmers had to cultivate late variety of paddy this time, they would have to wait for weeks to harvest the crops, they added.
Chairman of Sreepur Uttar union parishad Khasrul Alam said the Tanguar haor management committee had done the job. But there had been allegations of poor works on the reconstruction of the embankment, he added, locals apprehend crop damage if the breaches were not repaired immediately.
