Sunamganj honours six female war heroes

SYLHET, Mar 09: A total of six female war heroes (Birangona) were honoured at a function in Sunamganj district town on Friday in observance of the International Women's Day.

The Sunamganj district administration and the Women's Affairs Directorate jointly organised the reception.

The six war heroes are: Kulsuma Begum and Promila Das of village Perua and Alikjan Bibi of Chandipur under Derai upazila and Mukta Banu, Zamila Khatun and Piara Begum of Shulla upazila.

Poor villagers fell victims of torture and mass killing, as the 'Rajakers' attacked Perua village on December 06, 1971.

They set dwelling houses ablaze and picked up many to the riverside area nearby, she stated. Twentyfive villagers were shot dead while the females were tortured.

As the contributions of the six were officially acknowledged last year, they are now receiving government benefits as freedom fighters.

Deputy Commissioner Md Abdul Ahad presided over the function and Shamima Akhtar Khanom, MP was the chief guest.

The guests later unveiled the book 'Bijoylakshmi', written by Jahan Ara Begum.
