Sweet potato farming proves lucrative in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Feb 23: The sweet potato growers in the district are overjoyed owing to an excellent yield of their produce during the current season.

According to sources, harvesting of the crop is going on in full swing across the region and the growers have been earning a good profit from selling their produce in markets since very beginning of the season.

Bablu Mia, a peasant of Char Thakurdas village at Kawnia upazila told this correspondent that he has cultivated sweet potato on one 40 decimals of land.

He has already earned over Tk 20,000 by selling his produce and is expecting to earn more profit in the days ahead, he said.

Raihan, another farmer of Morneya village in Gangachara upazila said that he has cultivated sweet potato on 35 decimals of land. Due to early harvest he could make satisfactory profit from its sale in markets.

He also expressed satisfaction over plentiful production of the crop this year.

Sources said that witnessing good output as well as satisfactory profit many cultivators expressed their optimism to expand its farming during the next season.

It is learnt that a good number of farmers of the region, especially in char areas, have changed their financial condition by farming sweet potato as it has proved lucrative in recent years, sources said.

Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of vegetables including sweet potato. The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the vegetable this year, said Sirajul, a wholesaler at Rangpur city bazar.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources the soil of many areas in the district is very much suitable for sweet potato cultivation. So it is being cultivated aplenty in many areas. Farmers have been earning good profit from cultivation of sweet potato in recent years.

DAE sources said growers are given necessary advices and assistances by the DAE officials in this regard.

Use of modern technologies also enhanced yield of different varieties of vegetables including sweet potato in recent years, sources added.
