SYLHET, Apr 28: Medicare facilities at Sunamganj Ma O Shishu Kalyan Kendro are being hampered due to absence of anaesthetist. Especially caesarean operations had been suspended at the government-run centre while concerned patients are being referred to district hospital, sources informed.

The six-bed kendro has one operation theatre with a medical officer, seven family welfare inspectors, 2 nursing attendants, one nurse, one night guard, one Aya and six cleaners, but there is no anaesthetist.

On temporary arrangement a physician, who has training on anaesthesia at Sadar Upazila Health Complex used to serve as additional duty temporarily at the centre, which doesn't have any post of anaesthetist. But, the physician had gone on retirement recently causing trouble for services at the lone centre of its kind at the district town. However, Sadar Upazila Health Complex is also in trouble due to absence of anaesthetist there.

Expectant mothers get disappointed due to the present situation at both the health complex and at the centre.

However, the higher authority had already been informed of the situation, but it remained unchanged as yet, sources said.

The centre, located at the DS Road in Sunamganj district town was awarded nationally thrice for its services in the past.

An official at the centre said, “We are suffering much due to absence an anesthetist and for weeks we have to refer the patients to district hospital for operations. Normally expectant mothers from the less privileged class get services.”
