TANGAIL, May 12: People in the char areas of the district have been making good profit by growing different crops and vegetables.

A good number of growers said paddy, maize, wheat, kawn, pulses, green chili, potato, sweet pumpkin and other vegetables grow well on the riverbed of the Jamuna and the Dhaleshwari.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, official sources said farmers in the area generally start crop cultivation in the winter.

They try to complete harvest before the advent of rainy season.

Farmers said crop cultivation in char areas requires low production cost but it gives a healthy return.

Nargis Akhter, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE, said crop and vegetable cultivation is expanding on the dried-up riverbeds in the area.

"Farmers get good production of their crops and they make a handsome profit every season", she further said.

Many farmers in the area are cultivating varieties of crops on fallow lands by applying modern techniques. As a result, crop production has been increased, the official added.

Sharfan Ali of Kukuria village under Sadar upazila said he cultivated pulses, wheat and potato on 65 decimals of dried-up riverbeds this season.

The grower said he has already made a net profit of Tk 30,000 and is expecting more from the rest of his produce.

Additional deputy director of DAE Abu Adnan said Tangail district is well-known for producing quality vegetables.

"The department provides all necessary support to the farmers so that they can grow different crops and vegetables without any hassle", he added.
