Tangail widow becomes self-reliant by rearing goats

TANGAIL, Mar 13: Widow Salma Khatun of Gomjani village under Delduar upazila in the district has changed financial condition by rearing goats.

Once poor and helpless, the 65-year-old is now living a solvent and happy life.

Salma was got married around 40 years ago when she was a fifteen year-old girl. Her husband was not so solvent. At this time Salma decided to help her husband to run the family smoothly.

Salma then started rearing goats. Her husband died as she was a mother of four.

She, however, was continuing rearing goats for maintain livelihood of her five-member family. She worked hard to grow up her four children. She said, "I struggled for my children. I wanted bring solvency to my family."

"I took care of my goats like my children", she added.

All of her children now adult and got married. Salma lives with her younger son.

She still has 17 goats and earns Tk 40,000 to Tk 50,000 every year.

Salma's younger son Hafizur Rahman said, "We did not face any financial problem from our childhood as my mother fulfilled all our needs. Mother takes care of her goats as her children."

Her elder son Md Haroon Miah said, "I have lost my father when I was only 15 years old. My father was an insolvent person and had only 35 decimals of land with the dwelling house. Mother worked hard to raise us. We are proud to be her children."
