GAIBANDHA, Jan 23 (BSS): Dead Ghagot river will be turned into a modern Ghagot Lake through implementing beautification and development works aimed at building a attractive district town.
Huge uplift works including 3.0 km of the river will be re-excavated, 5.27 km bank of the river protected, and 6.0 km footpath on its both sides and two bridges built side by side with constructing four attractive ghats and eight benches for the visitors.
Executive Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) M Abdur Rahim Sheikh disclosed it while he was briefing the development activities in a monthly district development coordination committee (DDCC) meeting at the conference room of DC on Sunday.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Paul chaired the meeting while additional deputy commissioner (General) Rokhsana Begum moderated the function.
LGED would implement the beautification and development work under a project involving Tk 1.5 million and the works would be launched immediately just after completing tender related activities, said executive engineer M Abdur Rahim Sheikh.
In this context, DC Gautam Chandra Paul said the demarcation of the lake would be done transparently and properly without any criticism and irregularity so that none could hurt.
The DC also sought whole cooperation of the people from all walks of life to implement the project works timely.
It may be mentioned here that the speedway of the Ghagot river was diverted through loop cutting at David Company Para area of the town in 2002 resulting 4.0 km-river which was blowing through the middle of the town turned into a dead, the sources said.
Besides, other development works being implemented by different government offices here to push forward the district towards desired development were also discussed elaborately in the meeting.
