Tonnes of fish die due to severe cold attack in Mohadevpur UZ

NAOGAON, Jan 22: Due to severe cold like situation, fishes worth Tk 30 million, died over the last few days in Mohadevpur upazila of the district.

A good number of marginal fish farmer from different villages under the upazila have been counting massive losses, said fish cultivator Abdul Matin.

According to an eyewitness source, from the beginning of January, fishes have started dying due to bone chilling atmosphere. The biting cold has been prevailing over the last two weeks across the area.

A total of 200 tonnes of different fish varieties including pangas, carp, telapia, sharputi have died as they have been attacked with fungal disease, said upazila fisheries officer AKM Zaman.

"To mitigate the situation we have provided adequate suggestion among the farmers", he added.

Member of Parliament, Naogaon-3 constancy, Salim Uddin Tarofder Shelim has been cultivating fishes in a pond of 35 bighas of land in Mohespur village under the upazila.

He said his pangas fishes have died drastically in the last few days.

The caretaker of the pond Ajam Uddin said over 0.2 million pangas and 20 telapia have died, he added.

Senior upazila fisheries officer Polash Chandra Debnath said severe cold, density of fish and poisonus water are the responsible for the unexpected situation. "Now the situating is under control", he added.
