Vegetable output target exceeds in Rangpur region

RANGPUR, May 04 (BSS): The farmers have exceeded the fixed production target of winter vegetables by around 0.1 million tonnes after completing harvest on 96.80 per cent on their cultivated land in Rangpur agriculture region.

Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said farmers are cheerful getting super bumper output of winter vegetables with excellent market price during the just ended Rabi season in the region.

Horticulture Specialist of the DAE at its regional office Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said a target of producing 0.78 million tonnes of winter vegetables from 37,729 hectares of land was fixed for Rangpur agriculture region this time.

"The farmers, however, brought 39,466 hectares of land under cultivation of winter vegetables exceeding fixed farming target of the crop on 37,729 hectares of land by 1,737 hectares or 4.60 per cent in the region," he said.

The farmers already harvested winter vegetables on 38,203 hectares of land producing 0.86 million tonnes of vegetables worth over Tk 25 billion as they are yet to harvest the crops on 1,263 hectares of land.

"The overall production of winter vegetables might be around 0.88 million tonnes worth Tk 25.50 billion after completion of harvest for the Rabi season in the region," Islam hoped.

At the same time, farmers have already cultivated summer vegetables on 20,637 hectares of land against the fixed farming target on 22,259 hectares of land to produce 0.39 million tonnes of vegetables during the current Kharip-1 season here.

"The farmers are expected to exceed the fixed target of farming summer vegetables by bringing more land under its cultivation as sowing of seed is continuing in all five districts of the region during this Kharip-1 season," Islam said.

Vegetable trader Hafizur Rahman at Rangpur City Bazar told the news agency that farmers are currently selling each kg of winter vegetables at Tk 25 and summer vegetables at Tk 30 on an average.

"However, retail prices of vegetables are higher by Tk 15 to Tk 25 per kg in local markets," Hafizur said, adding that some quantities of vegetables are perished during transportations and marketing process increasing retail prices.

Currently, some 120 trucks loaded with vegetables are being sent to the capital city and other places daily from the Rangpur agriculture region, Hafizur said adding, "Market price of vegetables marked little rise from the last week."

Vegetables farmer Khorshed Alam, Hazrat Ali and Jamir Hossain of Mithapukur upazila and Azizul Haque and Ramjan Mian of Sadar upazila said they got bumper vegetable production with lucrative price to earn better profits this time.

Similarly, vegetables farmers Obaidul Haque, Shamsul Huda and Arman Hossain of Gangachara upazila said they got highest prices for their produced vegetables during the just ended Rabi season than anytime in the past.

The farmers also expected to get excellent production of summer vegetables with lucrative price during this Kharip-1 season in all five districts of Rangpur agriculture region.
