Villagers suffer in absence of permanent bridge over Manas river

RANGPUR, Feb 27: More than 15,000 people of Purbo Jagojibon village under Pirgachha upazila in the district are suffering much owing to absence of a concrete bridge over the river Manas at the village.

The local people of the village are being compelled to cross a bamboo-made bridge over the river to come to the upazila headquarter amid serious risk, sources said.

Business and public health services are seriously being hampered in the area as the local people living both sides of the river cannot travel easily between the upazila headquarter due to lack of a bridge over the river.

The school going children face great difficulties in reaching their institutions through the bamboo bridge. Most of them do not go to school in the rainy season for fear of accidents on the bridge, locals alleged.

Farmers of the areas are the worst sufferers as they are facing setback to carry their products to different areas.

"The bridge becomes risky in the monsoon. The bamboos get slippery and we cannot cross it easily. Sometimes the bamboos get damaged, yet we have to cross the bridge every day", said Nuru Mia, a resident of the area.

At the time of election campaigns the local political leaders make repeated pledges to build a bridge over the river but they become oblivious of it once elected public representative, Locals alleged.

In this situation locals urged the government to take necessary steps to erect a permanent bridge over the river in order to ease their sufferings.
