SYLHET Jan 10: Twenty-five major haors in Habiganj district were still under floodwater raising apprehension among the farmers about the fate of their move for Boro paddy cultivation while the farming season is passing fast.

The farmers are ready but they couldn't prepare lands due to slow recession of floodwater from the croplands.

According to sources, the major haors including those in Badalpur, Zilua, Kakailseo, Mahtabpur, Rahela, Rosulpur Ghardair and Kamalpur in Ajmiriganj upazila, Hafrabil, Koiardhala, Mahtabpur, Ekram, Makuli, Makalkandi, Mokha, Bitholgol in Baniachang, Golduba, Safati, Satbil in Nabiganj, Gungajuri in Bahubal and Begunai and Teghoria in Lakhai upazila.

A farmer at Baniachang upazila said the lower region of these haors was still under water yet although on some upper lands crops had been transplanted on some of the haors. Due to late farming many of the farmers if the region failed to harvest last year's Boro paddy, he added.

Some of the farmers, however, alleged the unplanned loop cutting of the WDB in the adjacent Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj had slowed down the recession of water. They demanded immediate and effective steps for resolving the problem.

Deputy Director of the DAE, Habiganj Mohammad Ali said so far 40,000 hectares of lands had been cultivated although the target is 1,20,000 hectares in the district. We have advised the farmers for transplantation immediately after the recession of floodwaters from Boro lands, he added.
