WDB completes crop protection embankment work in Sunamganj

SYLHET, Jun 10: The Water Development Board (WDB) this year completed work on crop protection embankments in Sunamganj.

The largest Boro producing district was given ever highest allocation this year in the pretext of last year's colossal damage of the crop by floods and excess rain.

Irregularities by the WDB officials and others were also responsible.

WDB Superintending Engineer, Sylhet circle, ASM Shahidul Islam told this correspondent that a total of 964 Project Implementation Committees (PICs) had done construction and reconstruction works on the crop protection embankments on the haors in Sunamganj this year.

The committees were formed with representatives of the local farmers and officials.

However, the WDB officials were supervising the work and the administration officials were monitoring everything, he added.

Already the committees had been paid Tk 1.35 billion in bills for the embankment work, while another Tk 190 million is awaiting payment, an official informed.

Meanwhile, the district-level monitoring committee at a meeting on Thursday afternoon expressed its satisfaction over the crop protection embankments' work done in the region this year.

The meeting was informed Boro paddy worth Tk 35 billion had been harvested in the district in lieu of Tk 5.0 billion spent in subsidy through farmers' assistance programme.

Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Md Sabirul Islam, also president of the committee chaired the meeting which was told work on the crop protection embankments was satisfactory.

Upazila council chairmen and UNOs attended the meeting.

WDB executive engineers Abu Bakar Siddique and Khushi Mohan Sarker and other officials were also present on the occasion.
