WDB files GD against 11 PIC chiefs in Sunamganj for irregularity in embankment work

SYLHET, Mar 04: Water Development Board (WDB) officials filed General Diaries with Jamalganj police station of Sunamganj Saturday for not completing works on the crop protection embankments in time and for irregularity against the presidents of 11 Project Implementation Committees (PIC).

WDB's Sub Assistant Engineer Nihar Ranjan Das lodged these against Abdul Matin, Sarwar Hossain, Abdul Hashim, Mojbul Mia, Md. Jamal Hossain, Bhanu Chakravarty, Radharaman Sarker, Md. Abdul Tayeb, Binoy Talukder, Radhika Ranjan Talukder and Haridhan Sarker.

The complainant in the GDs stated the said men had drawn bill from the WDB for their PICs, but failed completing works in time. They wouldn't be able to do quality works as per specifications and complete the works on the respective schemes and the 11 might cause trouble for the haors. Necessary actions would be taken against them as they might cause trouble for the protection embankments, the complainant added.

Jamalganj police station's Officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman Siddique confirmed the filing of General Diaries and said steps would be taken in line with the law.

Meanwhile, the PIC couldn't yet complete its work on the Kangflar haor protection embankment on the Barbhanga khal in the Sadar upazila. The PIC chief Anwar Mia said things remained in complete as the authority failed to ascertain the project's ending or starting points. However, if things were resolved immediately, they would finish the job in a week, he claimed. The official also said they couldn't complete the works by deadline February 28 due to non availability of labourers.

After last year's bitter experience of colossal crop damage due to irregularities, the Water Resources ministry this year introduced new system for doing the embankment works through the Project implementation Committees (PIC)s, with participation of local land owners.

But there would be more trouble this season due to mismanagement and irregularities in PIC formation, concerned sources and common farmers apprehended.
