Wheat harvest starts in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Apr 02: Harvesting of wheat has started in the district and it is going on in full swing. The farmers are in a hurry to do so as after harvesting the crop the farmers would cultivate jute in the same land.

Sources said the farmers are gradually inclining towards the cultivation of wheat instead of Boro paddy as it would enable them to cultivate three crops in the same land in a year. They would harvest jute within three months and cultivate Aman paddy there.

Sources said per bigha production of wheat is satisfactory this year as the climate was favourable and agro-inputs including fertiliser and so on were also very easily available and the price of those was also affordable to them.

While contacted Abdur Rahim a wheat farmer of Gomnati union council of Domar Upazila said he harvested wheat in one bigha of land where his production was 12 maunds which he would be able to sale at a total price of Tk 18,000 while his total cost of cultivation was around Tk 8000.

Sources said as the farmers are adopting modern technology in cultivation, cost of farming different crops has also came down drastically.

Threshing machine, weeding devise, tractors, power tillers and so on are now being used by the farmers almost in every village of the district.

DAE sources said this year`s target of wheat cultivation in the district is in 4,373 hectares of land and productions target is 13,338 tonnes.
