Death of students on highways

March 25, 2019 00:00:00

No sooner had our sorrow started reducing at the tragic death of Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals, than have we started getting news of students killed in road accidents one after another.

Wasim Adnan (21), a student of Sylhet Agricultural University, died on Saturday evening. This young man was pushed off a bus by its helper with whom he had heated arguments about bus fare. He was crushed under the rear wheels. The tragic accident happened in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj. On the same day, two students were killed in Gazipur on Dhaka Mymensingh highway-another of their friend is in critical condition and fighting for life. All three of them were on a motorcycle.

There were more causalities on the street yesterday---one college student (and one more person) died in Joypurhat in a head-to-head collision between two motorcycles and one school student died in Munshiganj who was hit by a bus coming from the wrong direction.

Thus, lives of 12 students perished on the streets in the last seven days. The number of road accidents is on the rise. Besides students, common people too are dying on the street.

We want the guarantee of normal death. The way we have been able to combat militancy in the country, we will also be able to prevent road accidents. Let us be united.
