Dengue is still not a countrywide disaster

July 31, 2019 00:00:00

When an aedes mosquito bites an individual infected with the dengue virus, it becomes the carrier of the virus. It releases the virus into the blood stream of the individual it bites. This is how an infected man contributes in the outbreak of the disease. So an area is relatively risk-free if nobody with the virus comes within it, as mosquitoes cannot travel very far by themselves.

Right now, Dhaka is witnessing an outbreak of dengue. Some 50 districts around Dhaka have been affected as well. But rural areas are still not affected at the same level. But they can be affected if virus carrying individuals start visiting these areas.

This is why it is imperative to stop the spread of the virus from travelling outside or coming in to the city through government and individual efforts. Those who have had dengue should not venture outside the city or their neighbourhood for at least a few weeks, until and unless there is an emergency.
