DUCSU leaders take office

March 25, 2019 00:00:00

The much discussed DUCSU leaders took office on Saturday (March 23). It was pleasing to see that the Vice President (VP) Nurul Haq Nur joined with others in the first executive committee meeting though he is still demanding reelection.

It is wise of Nurul to remain within the system and still demanding reelection. When he is within the system, and not away from the board, he is more influential and his voice can be stronger about probing the recently held election and holding election freshly.

There was a proposal in the first meeting to make Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina a lifelong member of the DUCSU. All agreed except VP Nurul Haq and Social Service Secretary Akther Hossain-both are quota-reform movement leaders.

Personally I think Sheikh Hasina, who has been serving the country as the PM for the fourth consecutive terms, does not need to be a member of a students' union of a university. If she is made the lifetime member of the DUCSU, students' union of other universities-which are expected to be formed in the coming months-will also feel tempted to offer her lifetime membership. Will she be able to contribute to the activities of too many students' unions as a lifetime member?

We hope the DUCSU and Hall union leaders will work together to fulfil students' demands. We believe the leaders will respect each other-irrespective of their party affiliations. Let there be practice of democracy from this phase of life.
