Environment pollution in Dhaka City

ENVIRONMENT in Dhaka city is at risk as air and water are being constantly polluted by manmade activities. As a matter of fact, Dhaka has of late earned the unenviable distinction of being one of the most unliveable cities in the world due mainly to some uncivil activities of its people. The situation has been worsening with increasing population.

Indeed the important aspects of environment are under serious threat in view of unplanned urbanisation and expansion of industries in city areas. The concerned authorities can also be held responsible for the above two activities which are not only unbecoming but also threatening. Like many other mega cities of the world Dhaka is also under pressure of increasing traffic and emission of carbon dioxide which is one of the worst pollutants. The DOE (Department of Environment) and other organisations identified two-stroke engines used in motorcycles and auto rickshaws as major polluters. On the other hand, diesel vehicles emit black smoke which contains green house gases like carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds.

Moreover, emission of gases from industrial units like brick kilns is another major concern for the citizens. These gases contain dust, noxious gases and other harmful particulates - all threats to our health.

In my opinion, the unauthorised brick kilns should be removed from Dhaka city and two-stroke engines which are used outside Dhaka and some other metropolitan areas should be totally prohibited. The Prime Minister has recently reiterated the need to protect the environment which will work as a catalyst for development. We hope her instructions will be heeded to reverse the trend of degrading the environment.
