Foodies, too, need to be aware

August 22, 2019 00:00:00

Dhaka has been famous for its delicious foods and is increasingly being a hub of varieties of both local and exotic foods. Simultaneously, thanks to consumption of junk foods, there is increasing number of people, especially youth, with obesity. Another problem in buying food items from kitchen markets and also from fruits markets is adulteration, which is troubling us as a nation. This has not only posed a health hazard, but is also damaging our image and in future our businesses may suffer due to lack of confidence of consumers in food items.

This is an issue of governance and in a growing economy with high population in a small landmass, that is a challenging task. While we will expect proper regulations in the food sector, let us also take some responsibility as citizens. Often, our food habit is not very good since many of our delicious food items are not suitable for consumption by the people who have crossed just 40 years of age. Many of us must learn how to avoid some tasty foods if they are not digestible for the specific age-group people. Secondly, nutritionists and restaurants should try to offer foods that are both tasty and healthy.

Of course, the food producing and processing companies should come up with campaign to make people aware of quality of foods, apart from maintaining good quality o their own products, in their business interest. There could be no better food market than Bangladesh where there are thousands of Bhajon Rashik (foodies) who love to taste foods.
