Leadership through action and example

October 04, 2018 00:00:00

Donald H. McGannon, who ran the Westinghouse Broadcasting Corporation and served as President of the National Urban League, had said, "Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example." A leader has to earn his or her leadership. A position cannot make someone a leader who would need to have followers. People follow people, not positions. They respect people who they have trust in. They follow people in whom they believe. This requires action - something that is of great significance.

Being a leader requires commitment, a new way of thinking and a different way to lead. It also requires managing and performing at a far greater level of excellence. It takes innovative thinking to generate new ideas, and the energy and thought process to troubleshoot and solve challenges. Regardless of the path, the underlying success of being a leader is building a foundation that is purposeful and impactful.

A good and capable leader of a country leads the nation to peace and prosperity. A cruel leader does just the opposite. Leaders in the government win the trust of people by being strategically friendly while avoiding any kind of provocation or war with the neighbouring countries. They also allow a degree of transparency in the day-to-day work and governance of the country.

These notions in leadership can change the ways in which organisations and communities function in our country positively. I can only hope that aspiring leaders will keep these points in mind while pursuing leadership positions in this country.
