Most teachers do not understand creative education

May 12, 2019 00:00:00

A Bangla daily recently reported that 42 per cent of the teachers of the country do not understand creative method of making question papers for the academic examinations. This is a major finding from a survey conducted by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE). The study covered teachers of 6,995 high schools of the country.

Education sector experts have pointed out that only about a fifth of the teachers understand the creative method. This is a very alarming situation.

The creative method was introduced in the country in 2008, first among class nine students. It seems our teachers could not welcome this new way of learning of the youngsters. As such, we are yet to enjoy its true benefits.

Lack of willingness of the teachers, insufficient training, weak monitoring of the field level education officials, teachers' fascination for coaching and business of various association of teachers are some of the reasons behind the weak implementation of the method.

To make question papers for half-yearly or final examinations, most teachers take help of guidebooks, ready-made question papers prepared by teachers' associations, or approach other colleagues. How then can these teachers evaluate exam scripts when they themselves do not understand the method!

It was expected that one teacher from each institution would take part in training sessions on creative methods. When they return to their schools, they will help other colleagues. Now it seems like this was an ambitious expectation. In most cases, a person would not want to learn from his or her colleague.

The government should arrange extensive and recurring training sessions for teachers. Also, there can be workshops for teachers followed by tests at upazila or district level where they can be asked to make question papers creatively for their respective subjects. The best performers of the exams can be given financial incentives.
