Playing with people's emotion

April 30, 2019 00:00:00

A few days back, I met a man in front of Shooting Club in Gulshan who requested me to give him some money. I wanted to know what actually happened to him. He said in choked voice that one of his family members, most probably his father, died that day and his family was unable to arrange the funeral due to lack of money. When I looked straight at his face, I could recognise and detect that I met the same person a few days ago at Bonosree area, where he was asking for money for the same reason. He did not look normal, rather his way of talking showed that he was a drug addict.

Sometimes while returning home--from my office at Gulshan to home at Bonosree -- I meet people who beg money pretending that they came to Dhaka from remote districts, they have been starving for some days and have no money to return.

These are usual practices in Gulshan area. The beggars are exploiting people, including foreigners, by playing with emotions. This beggar issue is tarnishing our image and prestige as many foreigners living in the area for business purposes are subject to undue harassment by them.

The concerned authorities along with law enforcement agency should look into the matter. They need to launch a drive to free the city, Gulshan in particular, of beggars.
