Port congestion hurts economy

September 03, 2019 00:00:00

The country's importers and exporters are losing hours and days and of course, money due to gridlock at the Chattogram sea port. Garment sector in particular is facing enormous problems as raw materials are not reaching factories in time and the exporters are facing delay in shipment of products. The authorities should take immediate steps to remove port congestion so that businesses can operate smoothly. The congestion at the port is harming not only the garment sector but also the economy as a whole. Also, gridlock on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway causes immense suffering to the people in general and businesspeople in particular. There is restriction on weight and accordingly, a truck can't carry more than 13 tonnes of cargo, down from earlier practice of carrying 22-23 tonnes. The conditions of the highway should be improved so that trucks can carry heavier cargo.
