Quota system should be made rational

April 11, 2018 00:00:00

JOB opportunities in our country are limited and the job market is constantly under pressure with an increasing number of educated youths joining the work force every year. One of the leading issues that had been contributing to worsening of the situation over the years is 'quota system'. A total of 56 per cent of government jobs is kept aside for some privileged groups and the remaining 44 per cent is left open for other members of society. It is indeed irrational, unjust and unfair. Of the 56 per cent, 30 per cent is reserved for successors of the freedom fighters.

It appears a little unfair although freedom fighters are gallant soldiers of our liberation war and the entire nation is deeply indebted to them. But many freedom fighters openly expressed the opinion that they only fought for their beloved motherland and without expecting any thing in return. They participated in our war of liberation to realise their long cherished dreams. They also mentioned that the 30 per cent quota for freedom fighters was once a rightful claim, but not any more. Time has come to review the quota for freedom fighters in a rational way. It will be fully justified to retain a quota for destitute or disabled members of freedom fighters' families and it may be filled up on 'first come first served' basis and the remaining vacant positions should be filled up on the basis of merit.

It is indeed a matter of great concern that many of the jobs under 30 per cent quota lie vacant for a long time due to dearth of candidates from freedom fighters' families. Taking into consideration of the present situation, 5.0 per cent quota for freedom fighters would be justified. I would like to urge upon the government to look into the matter and rationalise the quota system and allow our meritorious young men to qualify for the coveted government jobs on merit.
